The Benefits of Blogging

January 31, 2011

Why blog?

One of the important responsibilities that comes with being an author is marketing your book. Good publicity can be garnered through book signings, TV interviews, and book reviews. However, it is just as important to market yourself as an author as it is to promote your book. What's a great way to promote yourself? Through the new marvel of the blog. A blog, short for weblog, allows you to write a short commentary to your audience on a web site.

Benefits of the diary

Authors can use blogs in many different ways to further their writing career. For instance, an author can use a blog as a diary. Keeping up a daily blog about your everyday life may seem selfish and uninteresting. However, people in this day and age are drawn to celebrities. To your readers and fans, your life will be worth following! Authors with diary-style blogs update daily or at least once a week. Diary-style blogs are very successful because they keep authors fresh in the readers' minds. If a reader is attracted to your writing style, blogs are a good way to keep them interested in your work until you can publish your next book.

Generally, authors of fiction books use diary-style blogs. Authors of nonfiction books take a stricter approach.

Benefits of the issue-oriented blog

Nonfiction writers with a certain topic of interest are perfect candidates for writing an issue-oriented blog. This type of blog displays that you are knowledgeable about your topic and provides you with even further credibility. Issue-oriented bloggers provide facts and news about their area of interest and keep readers updated with current events.

The most important aspect of the issue-oriented blog is the opinion of the writer. Typically, the more controversial your blog, the more interest it will get. This gets a discussion with your readers started and ensures that they're engaged. Encourage all opinions and back yours up with facts.

The blogging decision

The decision to blog is often a hard one for authors to make. Generally, well-written and interesting author blogs grow the author's fan base and book sales. Creating an author blog takes time and thought, but it is an excellent way to take advantage of the internet's marketing capabilities, as well as highlight who you are and your expertise.

I hear that Wordpress is good to begin bloggin but then some say Amazon. How can you decide or do you "just do it?"

I am not aware that Amazon has a blog platform. Could be wrong, but I've not seen or heard of it. Wordpress is a great way to get started. You can literally set up a blog and be ready to make a post in 15 minutes. We regularly host webinars with Linda Lee, a Wordpress guru. We don't have any webinars about getting started with Wordpress planned with her at them moment, but if you search on her name here in ALC you'll find tons of on-demand info that can help you get started. I use Wordpress for my own blog and really like it.

Ma Ra - July 31, 2012 at 10:21AM ET

Hello, my name is Ma Ra and I am from Manila. I actually keep a journal, though my style is different from the usual diary. Instead, I write in (sort of)poetic manner (with rhymes and all that). So far, it works for me. Recently, I started blogging though I still keep it to myself. Hopefully, one day, I would be able to share my writings with everyone and hope to hear opinions and suggestions with reference to the contents. :)

Wow, now that is a different approach and very unique. Do you keep your blogs to yourself because you're not sure about them or because there to special to share?

Hi Charmaine, You got me there. There are some entries that I am not so sure about. And perhaps, I can say the same for almost the rest of them. Although, most of the entries are really simple, nothing much to decipher. :)

Faridah - July 09, 2012 at 11:52PM ET

Hi! I am Faridah from Malaysia. I am 53. I have now over 40 blogs but I only open a few to the public. I have one on my present book with Xlibris and also my university. Whatever I read goes into my blogs. I also add music to some of my blogs. All in all, I enjoy blogging and writing. English is my 2nd language. My audience is a bunch of people who like history, food, culture, etc. I only know them if they write comments at my blogs. Here is one of my many blogs: http://theearlymalaydoctors.blogspot.com/. I have to force myself to write in English or it will disappear altogether. All my 40 blogs are in English. My children are the co-authors in some of the blogs and they share the blogs with their friends. I don't have any problems so far. - Faridah

"A Dove Among Hawks"-"Satan's Penance"-"Triple Oaks" and very soon "Eden Roc." I have no clue how to set up a blog! I'm old and slow, but fun to watch! Any help in finding a plain English instructionon on how to set up a blog would be greatly appreciated! Col. C.H.'Robbie' Robertson aka: C. Edward Samuels (pen name)
