The Book to Screen Process for The Lord of the Rings Films

by Jennifer Brody

Initiated by Peter Jackson, The Lord of the Rings project was originally picked up for production into three movies by a studio that later demanded it be rewritten into just one movie, due to budget concerns. This disagreement led to the material being pitched to New Line Cinema as two separate films, but New Line realized the need for multiple films and required that the material be three films, as Peter Jackson initially intended. Author and former assistant at New Line Cinema Jennifer Brody explains that authenticity, casting and shooting location were critical in producing these award-winning films.
