After writers finish the first draft of a manuscript, their sense of victory is exciting, and their accomplishment should be celebrated. However, this is just the beginning of the process. In order to have the best possible manuscript, you need a thorough editing process. Racquel Henry, writer and editor, talks about common mistakes authors make in their first drafts. She has quite a bit of experience offering feedback on manuscripts, and she knows what writers typically overlook. Passive voice, in particular, is a problem. If you don’t know the difference between passive and active voice, you need to learn before you begin the editing process. Henry also discusses tense and point of view errors that are common in a writer’s first draft of a manuscript. One of the most important things in her editing process, though, is approaching a manuscript with fresh eyes. In the clip below, she defines the amount of time that a writer should take in between drafts. She also shares advice for what a writer should do during the time between those drafts.
