The award-winning author and former underground storage tank operator says the length makes a huge difference. Hill has written short stories as long as 7,000 words, but most of hers are closer to 3,000 words. Because they&rsquo;re so much shorter than a novel and take less time to write overall, Hill is able to take time to edit as she writes. If she&rsquo;s writing a short story and doesn&rsquo;t like the direction she has taken, she will stop and fix it right then and there.
