Per Andy Hollandbeck, freelance copyeditor and current managing editor for The Saturday Evening Post, there are two things that every serious writer must do before submitting their manuscript for publication - proofread and copyedit. Because writers are so close to their own work and are often blind to errors and shortcomings, Hollandbeck highly recommends that writers hire someone else to do this work. Like a dirty window that detracts from the scenic view outside, a book riddled with grammatical errors or confusing elements will distract the reader from the story, leaving them disinterested and unmotivated to finish reading. A writer's goal should be for their readers to be so wrapped up in the story that they forget they are reading.
