You have to be prepared to defend your material to copy editors, says author and editor Elaine Ash. Sometimes, copy editors and proofreaders end up changing the manuscript in a way that drastically alters a character or story. If this happens to you, don’t be afraid to push back. However, push back for the right reasons. Ash explains that an author's ego may be damaged by the edits, and will give feedback to editors based on hurt feelings. Instead, authors should defend their characters and voice, not an ego. Be vigilant and make sure the story is staying true to how you want it to be.
