Every book manuscript should go through many different stages and layers of review, including research editing, developmental editing, line editing, and content editing. Two important steps in the process are copy editing and proofreading. Copy editing is more comprehensive, explains author and editor Elaine Ash. A copy editor deals with sentence and paragraph structure, along with word choice and grammar. He or she will pay special attention to each character’s unique voice and style. A proofreader has a more technical approach. He or she will catch typos and punctuation errors, but won’t correct grammar or structural issues.

You have to be prepared to defend your material to copy editors, says author and editor Elaine Ash. Sometimes, copy editors and proofreaders end up changing the manuscript in a way that drastically alters a character or story. If this happens to you, don’t be afraid to push back. However, push back for the right reasons. Ash explains that an author's ego may be damaged by the edits, and will give feedback to editors based on hurt feelings. Instead, authors should defend their characters and voice, not an ego. Be vigilant and make sure the story is staying true to how you want it to be.

Author and editor Elaine Ash works with writers to make sure their book is strong as a whole – rearranging chapters, adjusting voice and tone, or adding and deleting material. Then the manuscript is ready for a grammar and spell check. Ash advises authors to find proofreaders and copy editors who are familiar with the genre an author is writing in. There are colloquialisms and industry trends that editors must be aware of when editing a book. Ash says you don’t have to like your copy editor and proofreader, or become good friends; but, you do want to make sure they will understand your material and do the best work possible.

Per Andy Hollandbeck, freelance copyeditor and current managing editor for The Saturday Evening Post, there are two things that every serious writer must do before submitting their manuscript for publication - proofread and copyedit. Because writers are so close to their own work and are often blind to errors and shortcomings, Hollandbeck highly recommends that writers hire someone else to do this work. Like a dirty window that detracts from the scenic view outside, a book riddled with grammatical errors or confusing elements will distract the reader from the story, leaving them disinterested and unmotivated to finish reading. A writer's goal should be for their readers to be so wrapped up in the story that they forget they are reading.

A collaborative partnership is the key to a successful relationship between writer and editor, as former freelance copyeditor and current managing copy editor for The Post Andy Hollandbeck explains. When adversarial, this relationship will be counterproductive. It's never easy for writers to have their work judged or criticized, but it's important to understand that even the very best writers are sometimes blind to their own errors and shortcomings. The process isn't meant to say your work is wrong or bad, it's to make it the best it can be. An experienced copyeditor will illustrate to you how to improve your writing overall. You will learn with each new partnership you encounter and will hopefully be able to rely less on professional help as you continue to hone your craft.

Per Andy Hollandbeck, former freelance copy editor and current managing copy editor for The Post, there are two things that every serious writer must do before submitting their manuscript for publication - proofread and copy edit.

You may think that you don't need an editor because the publisher will take care of it. But that's a big mistake. Even if you're just submitting to a publisher or agent, you're still competing against thousands of other books. Having a polished, well-edited book can be the difference between getting a book deal or not. Author and manuscript editor C.S. Lakin explains why you need an editor for your book. It's especially important for self-published authors since their work is going straight to the readers. Books benefit from critique edits which help improve all of the major components of novel, from plot to pacing to character development. Wait until you have a critique edit done before copy editing, which fixes grammatical errors.
