One of the biggest marketing challenges for authors is having a limited advertising budget. When looking for budget-friendly book advertising options, Simon & Schuster Advertising Assistant Kate Peppiatt recommends authors focus on social media and Amazon. These platforms offer low entry points in cost and flexibility in increasing or decreasing spend as needed. Peppiatt also recommends authors capitalize on seasonal trends such as summer beach reads, back-to-school, and Holiday shopping. Readers are primed to purchase during these time periods. She encourages authors to ensure the ad copy and imagery reflect the seasonal moment and meet readers where they are at.

In her role as Advertising Assistant at Simon & Schuster, Kate Peppiatt evaluates important advertising metrics during a campaign to determine its level of performance. The specific metrics that are measured depend on the goal of a paid ad—to create awareness, increase consideration, or drive conversion. When trying to create awareness for a book, the team reviews impressions. These are the number of individuals that the ad was shown to and they now know about the book. When trying to increase interest in a book the team focuses on clicks, engagement, and interaction. When conversions are the goal, the team evaluates the number of book units sold versus the amount spent on the advertising. It's important there is a return on the investment.

Peppiatt says the team is constantly learning from ad campaigns and evaluating ad performance to see what is working and what isn't. They want to ensure they are reaching readers and capitalizing on any trends or seasonal opportunities.

Simon & Schuster Advertising Assistant Kate Peppiatt says there are three main phases on a consumer's path to purchase - awareness, consideration, and conversion. These three approaches are used in book advertising as well. Peppiatt says to think of these phases as a funnel, with awareness being the largest section at the top. In the awareness phase of book advertising, readers don't know the title exists, so the goal is to get as many eyeballs on the ad as possible. During the consideration phase, readers are aware of the title but aren't ready to purchase. The advertising team will use tools such social media, Meta (Facebook and Instagram), and Reddit to reach target readers where they are. In the conversion phase, the strategy is to target ads at readers who are already purchasing similar books. Advertising on Amazon can be a great way to connect with these readers, using ads that appear on book pages under the "Customers also bought or read" section, which feels very organic. Per Peppiatt, advertising strategies are based on whether the team is trying to get attention, build interest, or drive purchases.

While both traditional advertising and digital advertising can be beneficial for a book, Simon & Schuster Advertising Assistant Kate Peppiatt recommends authors start with digital advertising. This is because digital offers better audience targeting capabilities, flexibility with redirecting budget, detailed performance data, and more cost effective options. When choosing which digital platforms to start with, Peppiatt suggests Meta (Facebook and Instagram) and Amazon. Meta is a great way to create title awareness, she says, because of the highly customizable and niche audience targeting. Meta is also very budget-friendly. With Amazon Advertising, there is a clear path to purchase because of the amount of readers already purchasing books on Amazon, and because of programs like Kindle + (formerly Kindle Unlimited).

As an Advertising Assistant at Simon & Schuster, Kate Peppiatt primarily works on executing paid advertising campaigns across both traditional and digital media. The team functions as an in-house advertising agency, working with the marketing team to determine where and how advertising budgets should be spent. The team coordinates general and title-specific campaigns from start to finish, considering important aspects such as market trends, sales goals, author platform, seasonal opportunities, and budget. Then, they set up the campaigns on various platforms such as Meta or Amazon. Ad performance is monitored throughout the duration of a campaign to see if any changes need to be made to optimize performance. The final step is to report campaign data and results to the marketing team to evaluate level of success and use the data for future advertising decisions.

Peppiatt emphasizes that the most important consideration when planning book advertising campaigns is to know the target audience and where these readers are most likely to interact with the paid ad spend.

Regardless of how your book was published – traditionally, self or assisted – Amazon ads can be a key component to finding new readers and selling more books. However, just because Amazon ads can be an effective marketing tool, doesn’t mean they will work for every book or marketing campaign. Before jumping in with both feet, it’s important to consider these key points:
