While writer, producer, and TV host Herbie J Pilato has a significant social media following on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram, he decided to expand his reach even further by contributing longer posts and essays to the online publishing platform Medium.com. Medium is better-suited for daily, lengthier posts than traditional social media, Pilato says. He wants to share more than book promotions and news about his work, and Medium allows for in-depth sharing and writing. The site is a more legitimate way to communicate, Pilato believes, because readers who specifically visit Medium come to read and interact on what is usually a deeper level than the average Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram follower.

So you’ve decided to publish a blog! Now what? What platform should you use? What should you put in it? How often should you write? Part of creating an online presence is trial and error, but there are many veteran authors that have proven what can work. Erik Deckers, author and president of Pro Blog Service, explains how to build a blog for the first time. His personal favorite platforms include Wordpress, Blogger, and Tumblr. These three are user-friendly and will allow you to start with the basics. Deckers recommends that you start small because the blog will probably evolve after you’ve been established. He also explains how to fill the blog with content. This is the more difficult part of blogging, which is why authors should focus on content instead of building out a large-scale website.
There are certain steps that every writer should take once they know they want to write a book - choose your topic and start an outline, research, and begin to think about your platform. There are many tools an author can use to start building a platform, but one of the more effective ways, as author Elizabeth Knox has learned, is to start a blog. She discovered on her writing journey for Faith Powered Profession that a blog and a book can greatly complement one another when written in tandem.

So you want to start a blog? You’ve got great content, your fingers are a-ready at your keyboard, just itching to type out your next great blog post. But, there’s only one problem… you don’t have a blog! Don’t worry… let’s start with the pros and cons of four available blogging tools, half of which are free and half of which are fee-based. All of the following options have tremendous potential.

The number one free blogging tool out there is WordPress, hands down! From the point of view of a developer, WordPress is a savior. It has multiple templates, and you can arrange page elements where you want them. All you have to do is click, click, bang—and you’re set up automatically with little to no hassle or fuss. The system of plugins that WordPress has developed is out-of-this-world amazing. If you want to alter the templates, you will have to know a little HTML and CSS. If you’re not comfortable doing something like that, you could always pay someone more experienced in writing computer code a minimal fee to alter your blog the way you would like it to look.

The second, most easiest blogging tool to use would definitely be Blogger, a.k.a. Blogspot (soon to be known as Google Blogs as of this writing). Blogger is great because you can have multiple blogs on one account and manage them all on a single dashboard. So, for example, you can have your blog about Harley-Davidson motorcycles separate from your blog about your non-fiction book about the history of the motorcycles spanning various continents and eras. If you wanted to combine the two topics on one blog that would also be an option—since they’re related. The point is, not everything on your blog has to relate to everything else.

The third blogging tool that could probably be considered the most successful is TypePad. TypePad does require an $8 dollar-per-month service fee, but that is minimal compared to what you would be paying in order to own your own website domain, plus registration and annual hosting fees. TypePad is easy to use. You can only have 3 blogs at one time, unless you upgrade to an unlimited (business class) account.

A fourth blogging tool is MovableType. MovableType offers its own self-hosting package for professional developers. For people who are not developers, there is availability to host your own blog for free. How much you pay depends upon your level of expertise. MovableType has various versions so you would probably want to do research on which version would be most suitable for you if you’re at just starting out with blogs but want a high-quality blog.

WordPress, Blogger, TypePad, and MovableType are all great options. Explore them all, define your blogging goals and needs… and then jump right in!

BlogSpot, also known as Blogger, has been a favorite blogging site for many new writers. In part, because BlogSpot is part of the Google family, its blogs are automatically included in Google’s blog searches. Moreover, recently Google has updated the behind-the-scenes dashboard design, so that it is more user-rich. While the new BlogSpot features make for a friendlier user experience, they do require JavaScript to work. (Actually, they’ve made it an optional alternative for now.)

When deciding on the look and feel of your blog, you need only select one of the many templates available, templates that you can customize. Once you decide on a template, you can change different elements with a simple click.

One of the great features of Blogger is its built-in visitors stats, which tell you just about everything you need to know about your visitors. This makes it an easy task to track growth in the number of your visitors over given periods of time. You can also use these stats to test changes to your blog, and assess whether visitors react better to certain elements than to others.

One feature of Blogger that appeals to many users is that Blogger’s free version allows the use of third-party script. One of the other more popular blogging site, WordPress, does not allow third-party scripts. Nor does Blogger charge for domain name transfers in situations where you already own a domain. WordPress charges an annual fee to transfer domain names.

If you are mobile and want to post to your blog via email, Blogger allows you to do so. Blogger will give you a special email address for your posts. Once received, the posts are formatted and posted to your blog instantly.

Finally, if you want to use Google AdWords on your blog you should definitely sign up for BlogSpot. WordPress won’t work for you, as it doesn’t allow Google AdWords on its free version.

Happy blogging.
