New writers often underestimate the amount of marketing and promotional work they will have to execute for their books, whether they are traditionally published or self-published. For his first two books author Phillip Done hired a publicist to help with his radio, television and newspaper promotional efforts. He learned the importance of book reviews along the way and with his latest book, The Ornament Box, he executed an advance review copy program that resulted in over 100 reviews on Amazon within the first 2 weeks of his book being released. For an ARC program to be successful, Done recommends reaching out to your entire contact list at least two months prior to release. Give your reviewers an exact date to post their review and be sure to send thank-yous to those that follow through. Most importantly, these reviews can then be used when pitching to book buyers, readers, or when trying to secure events.
