There are certain elements that improve a story's viability for adaptation to film or television. If you envision your story on the big screen it's important to understand how to effectively communicate to the audience, as screenwriter, author, and MFA educator Michael Tabb explains. A stage play, for example, communicates through dialogue. A movie, on the other hand, is very visual. Tabb recommends writing for your primary medium first, then think about the visual elements if your long term goal is to have your book adapted to screen. Some things to consider include how your story can be more cinematic and how you can put more focus on the setting. Also keep in mind that movies are more genre and plot driven, while television shows are more character driven.
