The way that viewers consume a feature film is quite different from the way they view a television show or binge-watch a Netflix show. Watching a feature film is an event, while a television show can be viewed more passively, explains entertainment expert and media arts instructor Dan Watanabe. This partly explains why viewers may more harshly critique flaws in a film versus a show. While watching a movie, our attention is extraordinarily focused. We’re soaking in every detail, so any flaws in the film will be glaring. A cable or broadcast TV show, however, includes characters who should, overall, be relatable and likable. Viewers aren’t as focused while watching a show because they may also be doing the laundry or taking care of their kids, so they’ll be more forgiving of any flaws in the television show. These differences in how the content is consumed does impact how it should be structured and developed.
