Cartoonist, author, and illustrator Rob Harrell was approached by producers at a Comic-Con event about his popular, children's graphic novel, Monster on the Hill. This chance meeting led to his book being optioned for film, but it took eight years for the project to get greenlit and produced. Harrell was invited to meetings with the producers to provide his input during the development process, but his involvement was otherwise very limited. The project resulted in the animated movie, Rumble, which was produced by Paramount Animation, WWE Studios, Walden Media and Reel FX Animation Studios. It was released in the United States on December 15, 2021 on Paramount+, and is currently available on several other streaming channels. Harrell was disappointed it was released during the pandemic and went straight to streaming, but enjoyed the experience overall.

He does caution authors that when you sign an option agreement for your book, you are assigning rights to your book's content over to someone else, and there is no guarantee that the adaptation will be at all similar to your book. Had he known then what he knows now about book to screen adaptations, he would have asked for more involvement in the contract so that the adaptation more closely followed his book.

As a traditionally published author, Annie Sullivan has literary agent representation and along with that, a side agent that negotiates things like movie options. Many book-to-screen option agreements get negotiated through an agent, but in her case, Sullivan happened to know the right people to get her young adult novel, A Touch of Gold, into the hands of Hollywood producers. They loved her book and in turn, offered her an option agreement, giving them the rights to try to develop it for the screen. In return, she received a fee for signing over the rights for a set period.

An option agreement does not guarantee your book will be developed for the screen; it only means your story is being pitched to studios, networks, distributors, and financial backers, to see if it can garner interest. Sullivan knows it can be a long process, but is excited to have the opportunity.

Keith Ogorek, President of the ALC and Fuzeframe, says there are four important content trends that writers should be excited about and aware of:

1) there are many more content format opportunities than there used to be, providing more creative freedom
2) more movies are going direct to streaming or cable, or to a mutual release, which opens the door for more content
3) fictionalized podcasts are becoming more significant, providing another medium for storytelling and getting your work noticed
4) the demand for new content hasn't slowed, continuing to provide writers with a lot of opportunities

If you’re a newcomer to screenwriting or the entertainment industry and want to get discovered, former Hollywood Development Executive Dan Watanabe believes you must be present in places where you can be discovered. He recommends trying to get a front office job, on set job, or post-production job. Any of these departments will eventually expose you to the executives and decision-makers. This type of job is your chance to show your skills and that you are easy to work with. If you are a problem-solver you will ultimately get opportunities to share your career goals, and eventually, your writing. But, Watanabe says, make sure you're writing is ready before taking up their valuable time.

If you are mid-career in another industry and want to make a change to work in entertainment, you may need to take a step backwards with a lower level position. You can use your experience to stand out. You never know what doors might open for you. This may not be a direct route to your long-term goals, but will eventually get your there.

When presenting your manuscript or screenplay to Hollywood decision-makers, it's important to remember that your project is just the prop, says former Hollywood Development Executive Dan Watanabe. Think of yourself as auditioning to the producers or development execs that you're pitching to. The chance that your project fits exactly what they are looking for is low, but if they like you and are interested in you, they will ask what else you have, so be prepared.

You can even inquire about what their dream project is and what they are looking for in a project. Watanabe says to try to connect on a personal or human level. Rather than focusing on the sale, focus on your strengths. What kind of creator are you? Are you story-oriented, character-oriented, or scene-oriented? By leading with your strengths and where you're comfortable, you will greatly improve your chances of making a good impression.

When reviewing books for potential adaptation to the screen, Fuzeframe Content Development Manager Natasha Gatlin says she will quickly lose interest in a book if the opening pages don't reflect the information that was shared in the book's synopsis or description written by the author. She's initially hooked by that description and finds it frustrating if the author doesn't quickly follow-through on what was promised. Gatlin says to make sure any characters, conflicts, or major plot points mentioned in your description show up in your first few pages. This will affect all types of readers, not just those reviewing the content for other opportunities.
