<p>In the early stages of an animated series, the creators may start with either a script or storyboard, writer and psychotherapist Dr. Stacey Simmons explains. Many studios prefer a board, which can give a visual interpretation that a script cannot offer. Even if there is a script written, it is secondary to the illustrated board in the beginning, and may not be as fleshed out. This is due to the fact that the creators have to justify animating their show to the studio, because animated series are quite expensive; the stories have to be something that can&rsquo;t be told in live action.</p>
