Writer, producer, and TV host Herbie J Pilato strives to explore classic television with respect on his talk show, Then Again With Herbie J Pilato. He explains that classic TV shows such as Bewitched offered an escape to viewers while also illustrating the issues of the time. Bewitched aired in the ‘60s, during the civil rights movement, the Vietnam War, and other cultural and social upheavals. In hindsight, Pilato says you can see how the show represented prejudice – two different people, one witch and one mortal, ignored their differences and focused on what made them the same. In the next decade, The Mary Tyler Moore Show presented female empowerment and independence on-screen. Many classic shows are a great resource for education, and that’s what Then Again celebrates.
