Writer, producer, and TV host Herbie J Pilato strives to explore classic television with respect on his talk show, Then Again With Herbie J Pilato. He explains that classic TV shows such as Bewitched offered an escape to viewers while also illustrating the issues of the time. Bewitched aired in the ‘60s, during the civil rights movement, the Vietnam War, and other cultural and social upheavals. In hindsight, Pilato says you can see how the show represented prejudice – two different people, one witch and one mortal, ignored their differences and focused on what made them the same. In the next decade, The Mary Tyler Moore Show presented female empowerment and independence on-screen.
When author, writer, and producer Joel Eisenberg’s fantasy series, The Chronicles of Ara, was optioned for a TV miniseries, he knew the adaptation would not perfectly replicate his books. Luckily, he was able to be involved in the writing process so that he could fight for what he believed in and make sure certain themes would remain in the TV series. Eisenberg says his experience with the network and writers was an overall positive one. In the end, the project went into turnaround, meaning the network could no longer create the adaptation most likely due to financial restraints. Eisenberg plans to soon re-pitch the story to other networks in hopes of receiving another option.

Writer and psychotherapist Dr. Stacey Simmons believes that women are being more fairly portrayed in media than they were in the past. Up until three or four years ago, she says, women were made “flat” in entertainment. They were predictable archetypes, and didn’t showcase the diversity of women in real life. But Dr. Simmons is hopeful now that she has seen more accurate and equitable representation in shows and movies. She points out the Netflix series GLOW as an example. The largely female cast is portrayed as deep women with unique personalities. This makes for a richer story.

Writers and content creators are in luck, says writer and psychotherapist Dr. Stacey Simmons. Streaming services especially are always looking for the next great story, and have plenty of room for new content. This is a change from the days of cable, when there was only a limited amount of channels and space. While films are underperforming, explains Dr. Simmons, streaming becomes stronger and bigger every day. She advises writers to create strong characters who are relatable, but also someone viewers may aspire to emulate. Audiences want to connect with and care about the characters on the screen.

The major difference in the development process of TV and film is that TV writing is much more collaborative, explains writer and psychotherapist Dr. Stacey Simmons. A TV show has multiple writers who work together, while a feature film screenwriter is usually working alone.

For writers looking to break into the industry, there are some hurdles. Dr. Simmons first advises writers to visit Hollywood or New York City, where writers can attend networking events and meet agents face-to-face. This is important, because studios generally will not accept unsolicited material. You have to meet someone who can make sure your writing gets sent along to the right people.

In the early stages of an animated series, the creators may start with either a script or storyboard, writer and psychotherapist Dr. Stacey Simmons explains. Many studios prefer a board, which can give a visual interpretation that a script cannot offer. Even if there is a script written, it is secondary to the illustrated board in the beginning, and may not be as fleshed out. This is due to the fact that the creators have to justify animating their show to the studio, because animated series are quite expensive; the stories have to be something that can’t be told in live action.

The voracious television and cable television markets are the primary market today for novels and nonfiction books seeking adaptation to the screen. With the proliferation of channels in the past ten years, competition for stories is fierce but also tricky. The Catch-22 of television is that if you haven’t been produced, it’s difficult to break through; but the good news is the opposite: once you are produced, they want to know what else you have. Books by new authors sell every year and TV buyers are approached through representatives like attorneys, agents, and managers.

This webinar will help you understand the following and more:

- what the TV market is today, and what it wants to buy

- how to prepare your sales materials for this market

-how to find your way to the buyers

Join Dr. Ken Atchity and discover the ins and outs of shaping your Hollywood career, and how to learn the nuts and bolts of the television market.

Dr. Ken Atchity (Ph.D Yale) believes in the power of stories to change the world. He’s produced over thirty films for television and cinema, including Hysteria, The Lost Valentine, Joe Somebody, The Amityville Horror: The Evil Escapes, and Warner Brothers’ forthcoming Meg (starring Jason Statham, directed by Jon Turtletaub). As a literary manager (The Story Merchant) he’s made hundreds of book and film deals for his clients, including nearly twenty New York Times bestsellers. He’s written two dozen books of nonfiction (A Writer’s Time, Write Treatments That Sell, and Sell Your Story to Hollywood) and fiction (The Messiah Matrix, Seven Ways to Die). He spent nearly twenty years as a Fulbright professor of comparative literature at Occidental College. Currently, as an active producer and literary manager, he assists writers reach dream career objectives in his five companies that deal with every facet of a writer’s career.
