Author Jo Whittemore talks about the perks of doing marketing as a combined group…as well as the downsides. The cliché, "there's power in numbers" works well in a collective marketing group. Collective marketing can be helpful because it makes you more desirable to conferences, who have the opportunity to highlight a few authors for the price of one. Plus, you have a built in support group as you build name recognition with one another. If someone knows the name of an author you're working with, it's likely they'll discover yours as well. There is a downside to collective marketing, though. Listen to the clip below to find out more!

One of author Lisa Beazley's favorite events for engaging with readers is book clubs. Beazley gets connected with the readers of her debut novel Keep Me Posted primarily through social media. Living in Singapore while having a global audience can present some interesting challenges, so when she can't join a book club event in person, Beazley joins via Skype or by writing and sending letters. At her readers' request, she created a discussion guide for her book that includes questions about her characters, theme, and specific scenes or circumstances in the story. Group discussions about a book are a great way to leave a lasting impression on readers. Beazley is grateful for her readers and finds participating in book club events to be very rewarding.

The Big Read Meet is a popular book club in Singapore that gathers monthly to discuss and review nonfiction books. It was started by the Straits Times senior journalist Cheong Suk Wai, who has a passion for reading and reviewing books. When Suk Wai started the book club five years ago there were no good meeting options for readers in Singapore, says club member and Penguin Books Singapore's Carynn Tey. At first, Suk Wai faced resistance from her colleagues, but after they saw the response to the first meeting they began to support her initiative. The National Library Board of Singapore also began supporting the club and offers a free meeting space to the group. Tey enjoys attending the monthly event because Suk Wai has created an inviting, engaging environment where readers can connect. What started with 20-30 readers in attendance has now grown to 100+ readers per event.

For award-winning author Joanie Schirm, making appearances at book club events has been a great way for her to get feedback and opinions directly from her readers. Being face-to-face with readers also provides her with insight into what wasn't clear in her debut book, Adventurers Against Their Will, based on the questions they ask. Schirm has discovered book club opportunities through word of mouth and through her local libraries and bookstores. She encourages other authors to make book club appearances to engage with readers and to hear first hand discussions about your work. If writing a book series like she is, this feedback can be very valuable for your future work.

Indy Reads Books bookstore Director Alyssa Starr Newerth knows the book market well. As the co-founder of the Indianapolis Ladies of Leisure Society book club, her goal is to keep her club members focused and engaged. Shorter books seem to work best with the lifestyles of her book club members. They read a lot of short stories and young adult novels but also monitor book reviews to see what's popular. Newerth says they've expanded to include other types of media as well, such as podcasts, to give members more options. Something for authors to keep in mind when considering formats. Many book club members from various clubs around the Indianapolis area frequent the Indy Reads Books bookstore, often looking for the more popular titles and the classics. Book club visits, whether in-person or virtually, offer a great opportunity for authors to connect with their readers.
