Authors who are writing books for students—whether they’re children, middle reader, or young adult students—appreciate the value of getting into schools and sharing their work. Going to where your audience lives every day isn’t an option for all writers, so it’s a key asset for those who have the opportunity. Some authors go to schools just for readings, some teach classes, some do presentations to the whole school. It all really depends on the author and what they’re trying to accomplish. Some authors hope to build their brand, others are promoting a specific work, and others simply love being with students and desire to have a speaking career. However, it can be pretty difficult to get into schools. Author Melody Dean Dimick has done many school events, but it hasn’t been easy. This is a product of a number of factors, but recent increased school security is a big challenge to authors. Watch the video below as Dimick shares how she’s found school visits and where she’s looking next.

Middle-grade readers can be a tough audience for authors to reach because they aren't active online like young adult and adult readers. Former seventh grade English teacher and author Laura Martin has found school visits to be one of best ways to create awareness and build a readership for her middle-grade level books. Martin’s inside knowledge of how author visits are secured and executed has benefited her greatly, and she sees a large number of opportunities come about through word of mouth. Martin also uses postcard campaigns when she launches a book to create awareness and promote to the schools. Debut authors are more likely to get opportunities locally, she says, because you are more affordable. For Martin, the school visits are critical to her overall marketing efforts and provide a very authentic and tangible experience for both her and the students.

To promote his personal development business, messages of empowerment, and supplemental book Life Sucks!, Malaysian author Eric Teh works with universities and other organizations in his country to secure speaking engagements. He's found that many of the universities are looking for speakers to inspire and empower their students. Teh has created an hour-long, experiential workshop where he encourages interaction and forward-thinking activities. Through these workshops, Teh is able to share his messages about the importance of thinking ahead to your future and making sure you are on the right path to achieve your goals. His mission is to help students and others focus their studies and energies on what matters most. He works directly with the students, giving him the opportunity to receive valuable feedback and enhance his business and speaking skills.

Co-authors Felicia Low-Jimenez and Adan Jimenez (A.J. Low) spend a lot of time visiting schools to discuss their award-winning, middle-grade book series Sherlock Sam. They work with a dedicated school distributor in Singapore to schedule most events, but also work directly with some of the teachers and librarians that have booked them for events in the past. The pair will even present multiple sessions a day at a single school. There are many schools that invite them back each year to talk to the students, exposing them to potential new readers with each visit. During these visits they follow a planned curriculum and encourage students to participate in exercises such as creating and writing about new villains. Felicia and Adan learn a lot from connecting with their target readers and always share their contact information for the children to reach out with their questions or to share their writing for feedback.
