Standing up in front of a room full of people and speaking can be intimidating, as can talking one-on-one with people you don't know. Especially if you're having to talk about yourself or your book. Fear of public speaking is a common phobia, but if you truly want to grow your readership you have to put yourself out there, says author and writing instructor Christina Hoag. For her first public appearance as an author, Hoag sat on a panel at a local library event. She was reluctant to attend but a friend that she met through a writers organization encouraged her to go. Each appearance after that got a little easier. For Hoag, these appearances aren't about selling a large quantity of books. It's about making a personal connection with people and gaining one reader at a time. The more you put yourself out there, the more people know your name and the more likely they are to buy your books now, or in the future. Hoag encourages other writers to find speaking opportunities through your local writing community.
