Jeanne Lyet Gassman's award-winning religious historical fiction novel Blood of a Stone was initially marketed to Catholic readers since it was published by a Catholic press. They then targeted a broader Christian market, but found that the sub-genres within this market (Amish, Moralistic, etc.) made it a hard sell since her book didn't really fit. She did find good success, as expected, with reaching historical fiction readers, but was completely surprised with the success she found when the book was placed in the thriller category. Lesson learned - don't limit yourself to a narrow target audience if a book has the potential for broader appeal.
