Most writers believe that everyone should read their book. The reality is, though, that no story is going to appeal to everyone. Every author needs to choose a very specific audience and market it to them. While secondary audiences may read the story, the best segments to focus on are those readers who will get the most from the book. Marlan Warren, Author and Publicist with Roadmap Communications, explains how to determine your memoir’s genre so it’s more easily marketed. Memoir is not the whole of a genre. You may not be able to have a sci-fi memoir, but a memoir could be focused on romance or history or even science. This type of “sub-genre” will give authors an idea for their book market. “I suggest that people do that after they’ve written it, not before,” says Warren “Because, otherwise, it just stops the writing. You’ll go crazy trying to think about your market.” Watch the clip below to learn more about how to determine the market for your memoir!
