For Carolyn Oei and Marc Nair, there are still many challenges in Singapore regarding the value that people put on things related to arts and culture. As partners in the arts and culture PR firm The Creative Voice and founders of the culture magazine Mackerel, Oei and Nair place a high value on what Singapore has to offer in the cultural scene. Unfortunately, Singaporeans don't make arts and culture a priority over other forms of entertainment, Nair says. There are plenty of arts and culture events being offered such as theatre, spoken word nights, and festivals - they are just not being attended. Nair is seeing a growth in local writers and in the support of local publishers and schools, which he hopes will continue making literature a higher priority in Singapore.
