As an author and small business owner, book PR/marketing expert A.G. Billig is constantly juggling her own writing and marketing along with managing her Self-Publishing Mastery website. She’s found that blocking out time for writing every day and staying organized allows her to maintain a productive writing schedule. Everyone has 24 hours in a day, she says, so it’s just about planning and prioritizing. If you are writing your first manuscript, Billig advises focusing on just the writing until your first draft is complete. Then start thinking about your book marketing strategy as you finish your revisions and prepare for publication.

For authors that are trying to market published books while also working on new writing projects, Billig recommends carving out just a small amount of time each day for book marketing. Even 15 minutes a day will help you make progress in building a readership. Most importantly, Billig advises authors to choose just 2 or 3 key channels to focus your marketing efforts, and to automate as much as you can to save time.

Finishing a book manuscript is not the end of the writing work required if wanting to get traditionally published. Besides query letters, marketing content, and other materials, a book synopsis is often a necessary part of an author’s submission package. Elle E. Ire, author and educator genuinely enjoys writing one-page queries, which most writers find very challenging. It’s far more difficult for her to write a book synopsis, which puts the entire book into a document that can be as short as a page or as long as six or seven pages. The length depends on what you’re writing the synopsis for. In a query letter, you’re not sharing an entire plot, but in a synopsis you’re sharing a beginning, a middle, and an ending. Ire recommends reading the book The Dreaded Synopsis by Elizabeth Sinclair in order to understand the structure of, and the content necessary for a synopsis. Listen to the clip below to learn more about the purpose of a synopsis and the best way to use your synopsis.

Authors have limited resources when it comes to both time and money. How do you choose what to do and, more importantly, what not to do? Lawrence Knorr, author and founder of Sunbury Press, explains how the Pareto Principle can help you decide where to invest your limited resources. The Pareto Principle is an old business trick that can streamline your energy and money. The Pareto Principle is basically the 80-20 rule, which is “one of those secrets of business that, once you understand it, you can leverage to great success,” according to Knorr. The Pareto Principle is this: 20 percent of your efforts and investments will result in 80 percent of your sales, while 80 percent of your efforts and investments will result in only 20 percent of sales. The statement takes a bit of mental gymnastics to understand, but it is easy to execute. The secret, Knorr says, is to focus your efforts on those things that result in 80 percent of your business. Those are the “20 percent” activities. Listen to the clip below as Knorr talks about how to determine what is worth your time and money.

Racquel Henry, writer and editor, has had her own experience marketing on a budget. She recommends that an author begin marketing in their local community. It’s a great place to start if an author has a limited budget. One of Henry’s methods is called “flyer-ing,” which she describes in the clip below. She also talks about libraries and coffee shops as assets in a marketing campaign. These methods get authors face-to-face with their readers, and that is valuable. However, social media is also a critical marketing method. Connecting with readers is easier than ever with an online platform, and authors have an incredible opportunity to humanize themselves. Henry specifically talks through the story features on social media, and how effective it can be. The best part of social media for those on a budget? It’s free! Listen to the clip below to learn more about these low-cost marketing methods!
