Since its release in 1969, Kurt Vonnegut's novel Slaughterhouse-Five has been challenged or banned by colleges and high schools at least eighteen times. Vonnegut spoke often about how he fought fascism during World War II and also about the importance of the freedom to read. Continuing that legacy, the Kurt Vonnegut Museum and Library has provided free copies of his book to students who have been impacted by censorship. Founder and CEO Julia Whitehead believes that everyone should have a chance to share their voice and supports the elimination of censorship through her organization with programs such as Banned Books Week.
