One of the most important aspects of being an author is your branding or public image. Award-winning journalist, broadcast personality, and National Reading Movement Ambassador Michelle Martin has had the privilege of working with many authors both in Singapore and worldwide throughout her career, and is a master at managing her own, very public image. For new authors, Martin recommends envisioning the type of reputation that you want in the industry and the message you want to communicate, and work back from there. Then, take the necessary steps to get there and be consistent along the way. All writers have a story as to why they write or why they write a particular book, so figure out your story and make sure everything you do aligns with this narrative, Martin says. Don't be afraid to put yourself out there to make a connection with readers, and most importantly, enjoy what you are doing.
