Gaining exposure and building credibility are a vital part of any author’s career. Tony N. Todaro, author, Executive Director of WC2 (West Coast Writers Conferences), and President of GLAWS (Greater Los Angeles Writers Society), explains how to build an author platform. Platform is your visibility as an author and includes your messaging, your credentials, and your brand. Authors need to understand that publishers and literary agents look for a developed author platform when making decisions. Todaro says a writers’ group is key to building a platform. A great place to begin is to participate in a genre-specific writers’ critique group. This broadens your base and can be a great addition to your resume. Writers should also take any opportunity they can get. Volunteer at bookstores and conferences to create opportunities. These things can lead to important connections, which can lead to more name-recognition. You can write a blog, which can lead to speaking engagements. Or, use a mailing list and social media platforms to expand your reach. All of these things begin small, but the contacts you make can snowball into more and more exposure that builds a broader platform. These efforts are all in the service of a writing career. Listen to Todaro in the clip below to learn more about small opportunities that can advance your writing career.
