It can be challenging for writers to keep up with all of the changes taking place in the writing and publishing industries. Professor and author Donna Arthur Downs discusses these trends and changes with her students in her courses through the Communication Department at Taylor University. First, she says it's important that writers learn to write tightly because of the shortening attention spans of readers.

Second, she tells writers to consider creating supplemental materials for their work because today's consumers sometimes need visuals or other media to keep their interest. Downs asks her writers to think about the different ways they can share their writing such as video or pictures.

Third, Downs emphasizes the importance of having an online presence or platform with her writing students. She believes it will be challenging to find a following or readership without an online presence.
