The marketplace for books is crowded and competitive, leaving many new authors wondering how they can stand out when promoting a book. Marketing and communications consultant Nicole Baker says that one of the keys to getting noticed is to execute unique PR or marketing initiatives that get people talking. Military thriller author Brad Thor utilizes pictures of his fans reading his books in unique locations. Political fiction author Steve Piacente has a map on his website that shows where his fans are located. Business nonfiction author Cathy Fyock wears an "Ask Me About My Book!" pin when out in public. Other cost-effective initiatives that Baker recommends include contests or giveaways that engage your followers. and leaving your book in a local coffee shop or retailer with a note and way to contact you. It's important to recognize that you don't have to have a large marketing budget to create awareness and excitement for your work.
