If you plan to build an email newsletter list to communicate with your followers and potential new readers, it's important to know what kind of email content will be effective. Per author and editor Troy Lambert, readers sign up for your mailing list because they want to get to know you and follow your writing career. Your content doesn't have to be super personal, he says, but does need to be authentic and include something readers can relate to. You can share content about a favorite pet, your travels, or interesting hobbies. You can even think about themes or elements in your book. Lambert also recommends addressing readers by their first names, which email management platforms will allow you to do.

There is a methodology and strategy to how frequently you send email newsletters to your list, Lambert says. Leading up to a book release, you should be communicating more often, but even between book releases you will want to be consistent.
