"People won't give you a chance if they don't like your cover," says bestselling author and Wannabe Press founder Russell Nohelty. His years of publishing experience have shown that the quality of the cover art and book itself really do matter to readers. The cover art doesn't have to be an exact match to the book's details and characters, but must fit the tone and genre. The book must also feel good in a reader's hands. If your book cover and quality can't compete with the very best that's out there, it likely won't sell. Nohelty shares how a simple cover and title update to one of his own books turned it into a big success.
Sara Stratton, owner of Redwood Publishing, has noticed an increase in book covers with bright colors and big, bold titles. She attributes this trend to the small, digital thumbnails of book covers readers are seeing on their phones, tablets, and laptops while browsing Goodreads and similar websites. Authors need a book cover that can quickly and easily grab a reader’s attention so he or she will want to learn more about the book. When searching for a book cover designer to help you achieve this goal, Stratton says there are many budget-friendly options online. For a couple hundred of dollars, you can obtain a great cover from 99designs. For a cheaper option, she suggests authors develop an extremely clear vision of what they want the cover to look like – including colors, fonts, photos, etc. – and find a designer who can execute your vision. This method will be less expensive because the designer doesn’t have to go through the entire creative process.

Lawrence Knorr, author and founder of Sunbury Press, explains the components of an effective book cover. Knorr has always had a love for photography, which he considers to be his formational background in design. He shares the most important elements an author needs to consider as he or she designs a book cover. First, he talks about the book as a product that needs to be packaged in a genre-appropriate way. If an author is trying to market a book to a certain audience, there are conventions a reader expects on the cover. However, this leads Knorr to his second tip: a book cover should not be derivative. He speaks in detail about the importance of a book cover sticking out on the shelves. Finally, Knorr explains the beauty of a simple design on a cover. What needs to be on a cover and what should be left off? How does this all impact eBooks? What can we learn, for example, from Steve Job’s design of Apple products when it comes to a book cover? Listen to the clip below as Knorr explains all of these tips and describes how he gets feedback on book covers.
