For the past 30 years the Indy Reads non-profit organization has been executing adult literacy programs. What started with one-on-one volunteer work turned into a much bigger initiative to help adults who have undiagnosed learning disabilities or never learned to read, and immigrants learning English for the first time. Per Alyssa Starr Newerth, Director of Indy Reads Books, the organization opened the Indy Reads Books bookstore in 2012 to help raise money for the Indy Reads literacy mission and to be a face for literacy in the community. The independent bookstore operates on a donation-based business model - all books are donated by the community, as is much of the labor. They get a wide variety of book donations and do purchase select new titles. Indy Reads Books also offers a consignment program to local authors and supports author book signing events. All books are priced affordably and all proceeds support Indy Reads' programs.
