How the staff at a public library is structured depends largely on its size, says library Executive Director Sarah Moore. Libraries have departments that are public facing, such as programming, services, and circulation. They also have many departments behind-the-scenes such as IT, technical services, marketing, and collection development. In a smaller library, these various departments might be consolidated, requiring staff members to wear a lot of different hats. Per Moore, public libraries generally have staff that are specialized in certain areas such as collection development, the department that is in charge of acquiring all materials for the library.
