Getting books placed on the shelves in brick and mortar retail stores is challenging for all authors. The marketplace is more competitive than ever due to the amount of books being released and dwindling shelf space. Book buyers are very particular for these reasons and are looking for the safe bet, which is often books published by the larger publishing houses. Book marketing advisor and Author Connections President Beth Kallman Werner recommends that authors start locally to build credibility and increase their chances for getting placement in the national chains. You need to build a buzz locally or regionally to create momentum. Every in-store opportunity adds to your sales and discoverability.

Author Chrome Oxide primarily uses Amazon to distribute and sell his short story collections, but says it can be challenging to get your work noticed on Amazon because of the amount of books being sold through this channel. He knows other science fiction and fantasy authors that have successfully used crowdfunding to raise money and sell books, such as Brandon Sanderson, but that is not an avenue he has explored yet.

Before that can happen, you have to learn the “rules” of selling your book into the retail market. Bookstores have very limited shelf space compared to the rent they are being charged. It is a book buyer’s job to make sure that those shelves earn their keep, and your job to convince them that your book can turn a profit in their store.

Setting up a pre-order for your book is a great way to create buzz and excitement prior to it being officially released. There are a couple of ways that self-published or independently published authors can set up pre-orders for a book before it is released. Book marketing expert and New Shelves Books Executive Director Keri-Rae Barnum recommends using a combination of both Amazon and IngramSpark. Amazon will allow authors to set up a pre-order for eBooks only through Kindle Direct Publishing. To set up a pre-order for a paperback, authors must upload their book to IngramSpark, a print-on-demand service. You can then link this paperback pre-order to Amazon. It's important to know that you have some flexibility with price and with the file version that you upload.
www.authorlearningcenter.com/.../OptionsforIndiePublishedAuthorstoSetUpaPreOrderforTheirBooks.mp4

The marketplace is more competitive than ever due to the amount of books being released and dwindling shelf space. Book buyers are very particular for these reasons and are looking for the safe bet, which is often books published by the larger publishing houses.
It's important to have an informed distribution plan when you are getting ready to publish your book. How you publish your book, whether traditionally or independently, can impact your distribution options. CamCat Publishing founder Sue Arroyo recommends that indie authors consider online platforms like IngramSpark to publish and distribute their books since Ingram's catalog is accessible to all of the major and independent bookstores. This makes it really easy for booksellers and decision makers to find and order your book. If you're looking for international distribution options, Arroyo recommends a platform like Lulu.

You can write the best book in the world, but unless you take the right steps, the readers won’t even know it exists. A book is a work of art, but once you decide to give it away in exchange for money, it becomes a product. The price you charge and the distribution channels you use are two critical factors in the commercial success of your book, and they go hand in hand with other elements such as your book cover and the marketing campaign. It is crucial for a new author with a limited number of followers to come up with the right pricing and distribution, especially during the book launch. Watch this webinar and learn what distribution and pricing strategy you can use to make Amazon list your book in the “Hot New Releases category” or become a bestseller in a category. Webinar speaker and book marketing and publishing expert A.G. Billig used one of these strategies to drive her book, I Choose Love: A Journey from Fear to Love, to the top of two different Amazon categories, and has also helped other authors achieve similar results.
