E-books are electronic books that you put out through the internet. People can download an e-book from your site directly or from Amazon.com, BarnesandNoble.com, or a similar site. There are a lot of free e-books these days, or you can charge any price you like. One of the great things about e-books is that they can be published so quickly—you can have an e-book on the market twenty-four hours after you decide you’d like to publish an e-book. Obviously, e-books don’t have the same kind of status as traditionally published books, but publishing an e-book can be a good strategy for writers who haven’t been able to get anywhere with traditional publishing. If you can sell several thousand copies of an e-book, that proves there’s a market, and you can then take that information to a publisher or an agent. A movie came out not too long ago based on a book one of our authors self-published ten years ago. He sold ten thousand copies, and we used that to make a quarter-million dollar deal with a publisher; he had proof that he had sold that many copies and that there was a market for his work. That’s very convincing to publishers. They don’t like to take risks; if they decide to publish a book and it doesn’t do well, they lose money. If you’ve already had success with an e-book, you’ve already put your money where your mouth is. You’ve shown that there’s a market, so publishers will look at you completely differently.
