Intellectual property is intangible, but you still have a personal right to it, says Greg Victoroff, Esq., partner at Greg Victoroff & Associates. Copyrights, trademarks, and ideas are the three most important intellectual properties for authors.

Copyright = the right to control your written words.
Trademark = the right to control a brand name, logo for a company, etc. You can protect single words or short phrases, too.
Ideas = your story idea can be protected by a non-disclosure agreement. If you express a book idea without protection, it is free to use by anyone who hears it.
