Author Kaitlin Solimine completed the first draft of the manuscript for her debut novel in 2012 and quickly found an agent to represent her work. After receiving some editorial feedback from some of the publishing houses that reviewed the manuscript, Solimine was left feeling that she needed to revisit the draft; like it wasn't complete. She spent two years writing a new draft of the book that focused on the story of the book's narrator. She presented her 175,000 word revised manuscript to her agent who wasn't able to take on editing the piece at the time. Solimine took it upon herself to cut the book down and rework the story to a manageable length. Now eight years into the book project, she had to start the process over of querying agents, while also considering alternative publishing options. The book's structure, voice, and language were a bit experimental and Solimine knew fellow writers that had successfully published through smaller, independent presses. Wanting to maintain control of the book's content, Solimine decided that this was the best path for her award-winning, critically acclaimed debut historical fiction novel Empire of Glass.
