Author and editor Leah McNaughton Lederman says the category of creative nonfiction includes genres like memoir, personal essay, travel writing, food writing, and more. The writing is based around true stories and real experiences and uses the literary conventions of fiction. For example, the people in your life become characters and you, yourself, are often the main character. In addition, your memories become scenes in the story. For creative nonfiction to be compelling, Lederman believes it must rely on more than just facts. It must integrate the authors own perspective and voice.

There are many markets for creative nonfiction and several outlets that exclusively feature this type of work. Lederman recommends looking at submitting to Creative Nonfiction Magazine, Brevity Magazine, Hippocampus Magazine, River Teeth Journal, and others. Publishers will have calls for creative nonfiction that vary in length - book length, essay form, or even flash nonfiction and micro memoir.
