<div class="asl-wikipage-summary">Literary agent David Patterson recommends that authors try to publish through traditional publishers, but he does say it is possible to be successful in self publishing. Publishers and agents do track if self-published books have been a success. He explains there there is no magic number of sales to be considered successful, but agents and publishers know what success is when they see it. If the author doesn&#39;t connect with people after trying the traditional publishing route, he suggests self publishing. Patterson explains that self-publishing is a great opportunity for publishing work specific to a genre. He also says the it is possible to create a fan base through self-publishing, which can then lead to getting signed with a traditional publisher.</div>
