Is it best to self-publish or pursue a traditional publishing path? Author and publishing consultant Patricia L. Brooks advises that it is possible to self-publish a book first and then get picked up by a traditional publisher. But ultimately, the best publishing option for a writer is determined by finances, time frame, experience, and goals for the book. If your goal is to publish your work quickly and you are able to invest some money up front for editing, cover art and marketing, self-publishing or independent publishing may be the right path for you. If you do desire to traditionally publish your work she highly recommends attending conferences where writers have the opportunity to pitch their work face to face. No matter which path you choose, Brooks encourages writers to keep their sights on their long term purpose and goals.
