Authors have an overwhelming amount of publishing options these days, so it's important to understand the pros and cons associated with each option. Self-published author Guy Morris has a background in program management, so he felt confident that he could either handle or hire out all of the different tasks required when publishing a book. He says it's important to do your research when determining which publishing service providers are the best fit for you and your book. He also wants authors to realize that much of the book marketing will need to be done on their own, unless they specifically hire marketing help. One of the pros of self or indie publishing includes being able to control all of these decisions. One of the cons is that you will have to manage things on your own or hire help.

It can be difficult to maintain your initial enthusiasm over your book idea throughout the entire writing, publishing, and marketing process, explains bestselling author, TEDx Speaker, and special advisor Dr. Mark Goulston. Publishing, especially traditional publishing, can take a very long time. That’s why Dr. Goulston says if he had to start all over, he would try self-publishing first. Nowadays, self-publishers have many of the same distribution options as larger publishers, and the process can move much more quickly. Dr. Goulston does believe the branding and credibility that come with traditional publishing are two huge advantages, however.

Author and screenwriter Michael Druxman was in his late 60s when he was considering the traditional publishing route for his book. But he didn't want to wait: typically it can take months to find an agent--even longer for them to shop a book and land a publisher via the traditional methods. He decided to self-publish based on the feedback and experience of writer friends and hasn't looked back. Now his books and one-person plays are on Kindle and in audiobook form. Druxman recommends self-publishing for authors who don't want to wait.

Valerie Willis on Her Self-Publishing Journey

For author Valerie Willis, the self-publishing path was not something she initially intended to pursue. After completing her first manuscript in the Cedric the Demonic Knight dark fantasy series, Willis queried over one-hundred literary agents and received almost as many rejections. But, within those rejections were a few requests to see if she had work in other genres to submit. Agents showed interest in her writing style, but felt her story mixed too many different genres making it a hard sell to traditional publishers. Some even suggested she consider self-publishing. While this feedback was confusing to Willis, she was also inspired to research self-publishing to see if it was worth pursuing. She found that her background in graphic design and computers made Amazon's CreateSpace (now called Kindle Direct Publishing) an ideal fit for her self-publishing needs. The one challenge she faced early on in the process was having money to support marketing initiatives. Willis now funnels any book profits right back into promoting her work, creating a self-sustaining business.

Publisher Sara Stratton on the Evolution and Challenges of Self-Publishing

Sara Stratton, owner of Redwood Publishing, has noticed tremendous growth and changes in self-publishing, even over just the last few years. She points to Amazon's Kindle Direct Publishing as an example – the platform, previously called CreateSpace, used to produce low-quality products. Now, it’s hugely improved and Stratton considers the quality excellent. She believes this change occurred because there is an increased need for self-published authors to publish and release their books on a budget, and Amazon has responded to that need. While this is advantageous for authors, there are challenges that have resulted from the growth as well. Stratton sees many indie writers overwhelmed by the self-publishing choices available to them, and there is an information overload when it comes to all the resources out there on the subject.

For her, seeing her novel The Last of Will on shelves legitimized the whole experience. Benko advises authors to do personal outreach to the bookstores. Don’t just cold call or send in generic query letters. Show up in person and talk to the book buyers. Benko also recommends listing your book on IngramSpark, where bookstores can find and purchase copies of your book. Do anything you can to make yourself known to bookstores and different venues and outlets in your area.

For writers wanting to self-publish or independently publish their work, there are so many opportunities with the various online platforms and service providers to help guide your way. But, per author and book PR/marketing expert A.G. Billig, with opportunity comes some challenges.

First, the marketplace for books is very crowded and competition is high. Amazon alone offers millions of books, many from self-published or independent authors. Standing out in this crowd and being discovered by readers is the second major challenge. There is a strategy to improving your rankings on search engines such as Amazon and Google, and independent authors are constantly getting more educated on this strategy. They are also improving their writing craft, making it even more important that you have a well-written, well-edited book that can compete. The third major challenge facing self-published and independent authors today is maintaining a productive writing schedule that will allow them to publish at least three books a year. Per Billig, this type of productivity, along with being focused, dedicated, and organized, can lead to a full-time career as a writer.

One of the biggest challenges she sites is the stigma that still surrounds self-published books. With this in mind, the number one piece of advice she can give to self-published authors is to find an excellent editor. Because part of the stigma around self-published books is that they are poorly written, it’s important for the manuscript to be polished beyond reproach. In addition, it’s important that an author develop the publicity campaign around his or her book. A book pitch is such an important part of the publicity campaign and is what will launch a successful book. Without a compelling pitch, a self-published author won’t be able to obtain the much-needed credibility gained by publicity pieces such as book reviews, endorsements, and a strong fan base. Warren also explains the advantages of self-publishing and advises authors to remember why they wanted to write in the first place.
