The main difference between independent and traditional publishing is the time line, as author and publishing consultant Patricia L. Brooks explains. Additional differences include the amount of money required up front by the author and the amount of marketing and PR that an author will have to drive on their own. If a writer can handle the rejection that comes with traditional publishing and is not in a hurry to publish, Brooks recommends pursuing the traditional path by finding an agent. The biggest disadvantage in traditional publishing is that the author loses some creative control. If a writer is working with a set time line and has the finances to front the money for professional editing, cover art and marketing initiatives, then independent publishing may be the best option. The key to successfully publishing independently is having some business or marketing experience under your belt.
