While some smaller publishing houses will accept unsolicited manuscripts, most large publishers, including the big five, require writers have a literary agent when submitting manuscripts. Having a trustworthy, connected agent will greatly increase a writer's chances of getting picked up by a traditional publisher. All thirteen of award-winning author Larry D. Sweazy's novels have been published by traditional publishers, and he knows the outcome would have been very different had he not had a good literary agent. The key to finding a good agent, he says, is to go to conferences or workshops to meet with potential agents face-to-face. Or, query agents you know are reputable and represent your genre. Sweazy provides a word of caution when querying agents via email - do your research and know who you are dealing with, as this person will be handling your money and career. It should be a collaborative relationship where you have mutual trust and common goals.
