Debut authors sometimes have difficulty getting the attention of agents or publishers because they don't have a proven sales record. Trident Media Group literary agent Mark Gottlieb believes being a debut author can have its advantages. While there is a chance that a deal can go badly with a debut author, there is also a chance that things can go really well. The key to success as a debut author, Gottlieb says, is having the right support team behind you, including a literary agent that will help you position your book in the right way. Even though publishers are willing to take a chance with a debut author, they are sometimes hesitant to invest marketing dollars in that author, allocating their funds to established authors instead. Having an agent that believes in your work and can help build excitement around your launch plan will ensure that you get started off on the right foot.
