So you’ve found a literary agent. Now what? An author needs to work with an agent to navigate the tangled world of traditional publishing submissions. This relationship takes a lot of work. Elle E. Ire, author and educator, explains the flexibility required in a modern agent-author relationship. There are different types of agents. Is your agent more editorial? This is a shift in the industry that you should be aware of. While Ire says you still won’t get an agent if your work is a mess, agents don’t always require that the work is in its final draft. This means that some agents will want authors to make changes—even significant changes. They are attempting to make your book more marketable and it’s important that an author takes the edits seriously. However, an author also needs to know what his or her non-negotiables are when walking into an agent-author relationship. Listen to Ire in the clip below to learn about the dynamics of a relationship with an agent who is helping edit a book for a specific market.
