Many self-published authors aspire to be traditionally published, but it can be challenging with a book that has already been released to the marketplace. Before approaching a literary agent with a self-published book, authors should have sold at least a few thousand copies of that book, according to literary agent Steve Hutson. Otherwise, you may not be taken seriously by the agent. An agent needs to know that your book can sell, so having a solid author platform and readership in place can greatly help your cause. Hutson recommends knowing how many copies you have sold before speaking with the agent, and being transparent about that amount.

It is possible for self-published authors to get a literary agent, but they must show "proof of concept" with their work, explains literary agent Steve Hutson.
