Avoiding rejection from literary agents can be challenging, literary agent and book development consultant Claire Gerus explains. This is due to the overwhelming amount of queries that agents receive every week. But building strong connections can increase your chances of acceptance. Gerus says that the best thing to do in a query letter is to acknowledge that you have some sort of connection with the agent. This can be as simple as acknowledging that you have done your research and decided that this certain agent would be best for you and your book. The next challenge is to sell your topic in a pitch. Your concept must be topical, but unique. Present an idea that stands out and will appeal to readers. Being able to pitch an agent in-person at a conference or book festival will also help strengthen that personal connection.
