By working with a professional that knows how publishing contracts work. This may be a literary agent or attorney. First time authors don&amp;#39;t have a lot of bargaining power, says literary agent Steve Hutson, but if you know what you&amp;#39;re doing you can negotiate a better deal. Hutson has never seen a publishing contract that he can&amp;#39;t improve for an author, whether that&amp;#39;s through a higher royalty, higher advance, or by holding back certain rights.&lt;/p&gt;
