David Hancock founded Morgan James Publishing over twenty years ago because of his own experiences and challenges with publishing. Early on in his writing career, he was able to secure a contract with a traditional publisher, but was discouraged by the lack of creative control and support received in the process. He was even limited on the number of author copies he could order for speaking engagements, and had to get his presentations approved by the publisher. Over time, he found that many authors had similar frustrations and challenges and he knew it could be better.

He then tried self-publishing where he was able to control everything, but struggled to build his platform and widen his distribution. This prompted him to develop an outline of a publishing model that was more supportive of the author.

Hancock's goal with creating Morgan James Publishing and The Innovative Entrepreneurial Publishing model is to help entrepreneurs that want to publish a quality book and maintain control. He teaches his clients to focus on their long-term business goals and to think two products ahead, while giving them the resources they need to be successful. Morgan James Publishing is recognized as one of the first hybrid publishers, and has gone on to win multiple awards for the books it has published.

One of the advantages of getting a book contract with a larger traditional publishing house is the assistance the staff can provide to the author including distribution, publicity, marketing, and sales. As a Senior Marketing Manager with W Publishing Group, a commercial nonfiction imprint of Thomas Nelson, Katherine Hudencial supports her author clients from start to finish, beginning about six months prior to a book's release. She develops an entire marketing campaign that gets implemented about sixty days prior to release and continues until ninety days after release. This plan encompasses everything from social media support and email marketing, to coaching and audience growth initiatives. Hudencial enjoys collaborating with the authors in determining how to best reach their target audiences.

Her role also includes creating digital ads for platforms like Google and Amazon, and supporting in-person events such as book signings and launch parties. At the end of a book's marketing campaign, she provides the author with a progress report and analytics so they can move forward strategically. These reports and analytics also help her team to see what works and what can be finessed for future marketing campaigns.

As a Publicity Director for W Publishing Group, a commercial nonfiction imprint of Thomas Nelson, Allison Carter says there isn't really a "normal" or typical day in her department. Some days she might be pitching her clients and their books to major television and radio programs, while other days she might be focused on getting review copies out to media contacts. No matter what she is working on for her authors, it always involves reaching out to garner attention for their books and to get their stories to the right audiences.

W Publishing Group works with a wide variety of nonfiction authors in the Christian space including pastors, ministers, social influencers, and celebrities. W's mission is to focus on books that encourage or inspire others, and weave a thread of hope that will lead people to Christ.

Traditional publishing is a business and publishers release many new books each year with the hopes of driving sales and being profitable. Despite the number of books being pushed out, W Publishing Group Associate Publisher Stephanie Newton realizes how important each book is to the author. For some authors, it could be their one and only book, their life's mission. That's why it is so important that each book is both timely and timeless. Newton wants her authors to see sales for years to come.

The key to a book being timely and timeless is in the writing, per Newton. A book that successfully addresses the felt needs of its target audience will always have readers, even when the market changes. When authors publish with W Publishing Group, Newton wants them to know that they don't have to go it alone, and that the work is not done after the initial launch and marketing campaign.

Wondering what the publishing journey looks like after you land a traditional publishing deal? If so, read on!

As an Associate Publisher with the W Publishing Group, a commercial nonfiction imprint of Thomas Nelson, Stephanie Newton works with many authors. When her imprint partners with a new author or an established author with a new book, her team's focus is on author care. It's important the authors are clear about next steps and that nothing is hidden.

When working with an author, Newton wants them to be comfortable with the process and feel confident that she and her team are very experienced. The first step is to provide timelines, next steps, and some coaching or mentoring as needed. She is able to help authors with a variety of challenges, depending on their specific needs. Newton also discusses early on how the author wants to collaborate so that she can support them in the best way possible.

Once these initial steps are complete, an author's manuscript will go through global structural editing before it goes to copyediting. In addition to editorial support, her imprint's authors get publicity, marketing, and sales support.

Whether a completed manuscript is submitted or a dynamic book proposal is presented, Newton enjoys helping authors shape their manuscripts for success.

As an Associate Publisher with the W Publishing Group, a commercial nonfiction imprint of Thomas Nelson, Stephanie Newton defines her role based on the needs of her leadership team. Her role focuses on three main areas 1) book acquisition, 2) leading internal processes, and 3) managing a team of production editors. Newton enjoys being able to contribute to her imprint's growth through a variety of tasks.

At W Publishing Group, Newton and her team are looking for authors that can be missional partners. These are writers trying to inspire the world through transformative storytelling. Their writing focuses on showing people and teaching people, not just telling people their story, Newton says. These writers are looking for a way to teach people to live their lives differently and grow in their faith through story.
