Cartoonist and Illustrator Rob Harrell on Doing Freelance Work

Cartoonist, author, and illustrator Rob Harrell has done a lot of different types of creative work in his career including comic strips, graphic novels, middle-grade novels, and commissioned figurative artwork. He's illustrated all of his own work including the Big Top comic strip, and the Monster on the Hill, Life of Zarf, and Batpig graphic novels. While Harrell hasn't done much freelance illustration work in recent years due to his own busy project schedule, he is certainly open to it if time allows. Authors can hire freelance illustrators to do the artwork for their books if they aren't illustrators themselves. Harrell is even open to hiring other illustrators for one of his projects just to give a new look and feel to his work. As a full-time creator and writer, Harrell keeps very busy but is thankful for the work he wakes up to each day.

Finding the right illustrator for your children's book is an important step in the publishing process. You need to ensure that the illustrator's artistic style is a good fit for your story and that you can maintain a productive and collaborative working relationship. When co-authors Felicia Low-Jimenez and Adan Jimenez (A.J. Low) were given the opportunity to work on a children's book series for Singaporean publisher Epigram Books, they already had a talented artist in mind to illustrate their work and they lobbied for him. This was Eisner nominated comic artist Andrew Tan. Tan submitted samples of his work to Epigram and was chosen to illustrate their award-winning Sherlock Sam middle-grade series. Because of an existing friendship, the co-authors knew Tan's style would be a good fit and that he would be easy to work with. The pair have been impressed with Tan's attention to detail and his commitment to produce the best work possible.

Traditionally published author Diane Z. Shore has never met any of the illustrators that have created the artwork for her children's books. She has found that the editors in traditional publishing houses often don't want illustrators to be influenced or limited by the authors. They want to give the illustrators artistic license. This was initially difficult for her to understand, but she learned that despite some creative differences, the editors and illustrators know what they are doing. Shore's manuscript School Bus Bop about a bus that drives around and gobbles up its stops, became the dinosaur-themed Bus-a-Saurus Bop once it got into the hands of the illustrator. This book is still in print after fourteen years, proving that authors must trust their editors and illustrators.
