As a former seventh grade English teacher, middle-grade author Laura Martin received the best possible training to write for her target reader. This experience also gave her great insight into creating curriculum that inspires and engages this age group. Too often books are dissected, Martin says, which is not the right approach. Students in the 8-12 age group need to play, explore, and discover. For her critically acclaimed Edge of Extinction book series, Martin created teaching materials that focused on the dinosaur theme while providing recommended activities to engage the students. Her teaching guides for her series and latest novel, Float, are available as free downloads through her publisher's website. Martin sees these materials as a natural complement to her books and as a way to make her books more marketable to teachers.

Author and film critic Sam Staley (SR Staley) is an educator at heart. With a background in social science and public policy, he knows a lot about politics, economics, and history. Staley enjoys learning from the world and relationships around him and brings this passion to all of his fiction work including his award-winning historical fiction series, Pirate of Panther Bay. Aimed at young adults, his books contain learning content that can be used in the classroom as a method of teaching history. Staley's series provides historically accurate information surrounding many events during the 1780's including the American Revolution, colonial powers and dynamics, and different social classes. While Staley doesn't necessarily intend for his books to be used in the classroom, he is always thinking about how a story can influence readers to draw from his themes and characters to learn about themselves, making them an effective teaching tool.

One of Diane Z. Shore's favorite parts of being a children's author is visiting schools, where she gets to inspire the kids to read and write. As a read-aloud advocate, Shore knows that many children are reluctant readers and need that extra encouragement. The author visits provide the children with the background on the books and an opportunity to interact with the author, which motivates them to want to read. Per Shore, reading is the best way for children to increase their vocabulary and is an essential part of their success in school. In turn, she is equally inspired by being around the children during these visits, often getting ideas for her next book.
